Reports & Surveys

According to a study by IDC, the Singapore BPO market is set to increase from USD 440 million to USD 817 million by the end of 2009. The study revealed that the BPO market in Singapore is considered semi-mature and more geared towards Finance and Accounting (F&A), HR and logistics. In comparison, the overall Asian BPO market is more complex because it contains a mix of opposites - semi-mature BPO markets such as Australia and New Zealand, and those in their infancy such as Malaysia and Thailand, as well as major outsourcing and offshoring exporters, such as India. Meanwhile, the Asia-Pacific BPO market is projected to grow by 15 percent a year between 2005 to 2009, to cross the USD 12 billion mark. The growth is expected to occur despite the challenges presented by the size and complexity of the region's BPO services market.

According to a report by Gartner, EMEA Financial Service Providers (FSPs) are expected to spend USD 46.2 billion on IT services in 2005. However, the report states that less than 30 percent of these firms will outsource any strategic projects by the end of 2006. Gartner stated that most FSPs currently use outsourcing tactically to augment staff for faster-project turnaround or to reduce operational costs, rather than for strategic value. The company added that FSPs should now begin outsourcing strategic projects in order to gain larger-scale, enterprise-wide value. Gartner believes that if used properly, outsourcing can be a strategic tool to help FSPs transform their organizations, gain operational efficiencies, respond to shifting industry conditions and better meet top-level business objectives, such as increased profitability. However, if outsourcing is used incorrectly or not properly managed, it is a risk endeavor and can lead to wasted time, money, project failures and business failures.

According to a study by Gartner, the Indian ICT export industry will be worth USD 16.5 billion by 2005. The study predicts that application outsourcing will constitute the major component, followed by IT services and high end BPO services. By the end of 2005, IT services are projected to grow at 35 percent, while BPO services are estimated to grow at 45 percent. Gartner also estimates that by 2008, the Indian ICT expenditure will exceed USD 54.8 billion, up from USD 29.5 billion in 2004, representing a CAGR of 19 percent. The study revealed that domestic vendors presently account for 42 percent of the market share, as opposed to 58 percent held by foreign vendors. The study also warns that if Indian vendors do not focus on the domestic market opportunity, this percentage could slip even further by 2008.

According to a recent Nasscom survey, the current skilled manpower pool in the Indian BPO industry is two hundred thousand, while the requirement is about eight hundred thousand. A research done by temporary staffing major, TeamLease reveals that 15-20 pct of staff globally in the BPO-ITeS industry are temporary, part-time or just contingency workforce. In India though, temporary staff in this industry is still less than only 5 pct of the total workforce. This number is set to increase. According to Mr Ashok Reddy, managing director, Teamlease says, 'There is a huge gap between demand and supply here. Temporary staff brings in the alternate staff to the job market.'
